Steel City Noise-Punk Meets PGH Indie Hip Hop
Last month, we explored the mellower side of Get Hip with the debut of our Folk Series. This month we switch gears, offering a collaborative Split EP from two of Pittsburgh’s most sublimely aggressive underground artists: Trash Bag and SIKES.
For the uninitiated: Trash Bag is a stripped-down, noised-out, female-fronted punk three-piece, and SIKES is an indie hip hop producer/emcee and veteran of Pittsburgh’s music scene.
So how did this extra-ordinary mashup occur? We’ll let SIKES tell the story in his own words:
One day SIKES asked Trash Bag to do a split. Trash Bag said “Okay.”
Trash Bag (aka Max, Tyler and Lauren) wrote three-and-a-half songs.
Matt Very recorded them at Very Tight Recordings.
Matt Very sent those recordings to SIKES. SIKES sampled all of those songs.
SIKES made three-and-a-half songs using only those samples.
Matt Very recorded SIKES’ vocals at Very Tight Recordings.
Trash Bag and SIKES hugged.
Matt Very watched and then mastered the songs. Everyone moshed.
THE END.
(Thanks, SIKES.)
The Trash Bag / SIKES’ Split EP will be released April 28. It’s available as a single-sided 12″ LP, pressed on limited edition Translucent Green w/ Black Splatter color vinyl, complete with a hand-torn OBI strip. This pressing is limited to just 300 copies. You can also pick up the Split on CD.
