DONOVAN’S BRAIN “CARELESSLY RESTORED ART”

After several critically acclaimed 45s including the Get Hip-issued “Hit Me, In the Face / 50,000,000 Years” (1996), Donovan’s Brain has finally released their debut long-player: the provocatively named Carelessly Restored Art.

In the pipeline for a couple of years, DB mastermind Rob Sanchez has carefully crafted an album of well-produced Psych-pop that fits easily beside indie darlings Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control, as well as psych classics like The Dukes of Stratosphear.

In addition to DB’s Montana-based backing band, the album features a great line-up of guest musicians including The Fastbacks’ Kurt Bloch and Young Fresh Fellows/R.E.M.’s Scott McCaughey, plus superior mixing by Posies’ Ken Stringfellow. All of the songs on Art are brain-melting originals, with just one exception: a surprising cover of Guided by Voices’ “Smothered in Hugs.”
