Description

In late 1998, soon after the release of the Resonars debut album on Tucson label Star Time, Matt Rendon began to collect more songs for the followup. Unbeknownst to Rendon, Star Time owner/operator Scott Moody had sent a copy to Get Hip Records. As the story goes – someone at the Get Hip warehouse was playing the LP when it caught the attention of Gregg and Barbara. A few weeks later while working at the esteemed PDQ records, Scott Moody received a call from Gregg about how he might contact Matt. It just so happened that Matt was there in the store digging in the endless rows of bins. Gregg asked if he could have something ready in a couple of months and Matt said ‘yeah, no problem’.

Actually there was a problem. The tracks compiled for the would-be second LP didn’t really fit Get Hip’s aesthetic in Matt’s opinion, and so it was decided to record an entire record of new songs in two months. Two things happened though that opened the floodgates of creativity – 1) the repair of Rendon’s Rickenbacker 360-12 after sitting unused for over a year, and 2) an obsession with the vocal arrangements of the Mamas and the Papas.

Rickenbacker permeates every track both as a lead and rhythm instrument with a Townshend/McGuinn hybrid approach. Also on every track – four, five and six part harmonies used either in tandem or as call and response.

The songs themselves are 14 tales of unrequited love and living in a colorless late ’90s world, watching your friends conform and move on without you.
